Maternal Fetal Medicine
Our MissionThe Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, is dedicated to our mission of providing the highest quality care to expectant mothers with a high-risk health condition, fetal abnormality, or obstetric complication. Our team of leading MFM specialists, clinical nurses, and genetic counselors work together to manage high-risk pregnancies for women with serious medical diseases or critical care issues, or whose pregnancies complicated by fetal structural, functional, or genetic abnormalities. Our team has developed particular expertise in managing multiple pregnancies, from identical twin gestations complicated by malformations, to discordant growth and twin-twin transfusion syndrome. Our MFM specialists pioneered in-utero fetal procedures to treat some of these conditions, using radiofrequency ablation, fetal blood transfusion and shunt procedures to drain abnormal fluid collections or an obstructed fetal bladder.
Over 100 Years of ExcellenceMFM occupies a specialized section within Sloane Hospital for Women, an innovative institution that has been caring for women for more than a century, where our patients benefit from the resources of a specialized hospital for mothers. As members Columbia University Medical Center’s (CUMC) academic community, associated with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP), we coordinate our services with international experts in many treatment areas: cardiology; genetics; reproductive endocrinology; and psychiatry. Our MFM specialists partner with NYP’s Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York (NYP-MSCHONY) which allows us to offer specialized resources for babies, including neonatology, pediatrics, pediatric surgery and pediatric cardiology. This collaboration enables our MFM experts to offer every possible diagnostic and therapeutic option for mothers and babies.
A Collaborative, Multidisciplinary ApproachTo provide our patients with the very best care, our teams spans many specialties to ensure coordination of many services to meet each patient’s unique needs. From routine screening tests to the most advanced diagnosis and management of high-risk pregnancies, we provide comprehensive, quality services for both mother and baby. We are equipped to manage pre-existing and newly detected maternal medical complications such as hypertension, thyroid disorders, cardiac disease, and diabetes. We offer specialized expertise in ultrasound imaging and the most current prenatal diagnostic procedures for advanced fetal assessment. Pregnancies diagnosed with fetal complications are referred to the Carmen and John Thain Center for Prenatal Pediatrics located in NYP’s MSCHONY where teams of MFM, neonatal and pediatric specialists work together to provide the best care options for patients, before and after birth. In addition to diagnosis and treatment, services include coordinating appointments with specialists and counseling.
Education: Training Future MFM LeadersIn addition to our excellent standard of practice, we take great pride in our educational and research programs, which are carefully integrated within our clinical activities. Our department is an integral part of CUMC, where the connection to NYP, a premier teaching hospital, and world-class academic medical community attracts leading faculty experts to train future MFM specialists in research and clinical care. Our faculty works to train medical students, residents and fellows to manage high-risk pregnancies within a carefully supervised environment. Offering one of the largest MFM fellowships nationwide, our program provides superior training, opportunities in cutting-edge research and hands-on experience, attracting the top residents and fellows from around the country.
