Biography

Dr. Levine is committed to providing innovative, safe, caring and high quality medical care. He advises his students, "If you listen to the patients, they will tell you the diagnosis and you can respond to their needs". His career is highlighted by the minimally invasive surgical procedures he pioneered, which are now widely practiced, and by his leadership in efforts to improve the quality of medical care for all patients. Dr. Levine wrote the original research papers outlining the use of hysteroscopy as a diagnostic and surgical procedure. This breakthrough introduced one of the first minimally-invasive surgical procedures enabling gynecologists a view into the uterus, and a way to treat abnormalities without making an abdominal incision. He also specializes in evaluating abnormal Pap smears and managing patients infected with Human Papillomavirus (HPV). He pioneered the use of laser surgery and other minimally invasive outpatient surgical procedures to treat neoplasias. Dr. Levine practices general gynecology performing routine exams, advising patients about menopause, HPV, and contraception. He provides second opinion consultations to evaluate the need for surgery. He has been honored for his humanism by the Arnold Gold Foundation and recognized by many Best Doctor Lists. His highest honor is the establishment of the Levine Family Professorship at Columbia, an endowment fund supported by donations from many grateful patients to improve healthcare for women.
