Biography

Dr. Burke received his undergraduate and medical training at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons followed by a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Michigan. After serving on the faculty at the University of Michigan, Dr. Burke returned to Columbia University as a faculty member in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology in 2006. Dr. Burke is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and gynecologic oncology.

 

Dr. Burke has served as the Director of Gynecologic Oncology at the Columbia-affiliated Valley Hospital. He has won numerous teaching awards both at University of Michigan and at Columbia. Dr. Burke’s clinical interests include chemotherapeutic and surgical options for advanced ovarian cancer, minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery for gynecologic malignancies and complex benign gynecologic problems, and treatment of pre-invasive conditions of the cervix, vulva, and vagina.

 

Dr. Burke currently trains both gynecologists and gynecologic oncologists nationally and internationally in robotic surgical techniques. At the University of Michigan, he and his colleagues published some of the first reports describing use of robotic surgical systems to complete minimally invasive myomectomy and cancer staging procedures. While at Columbia, he has performed multiple live surgical procedures for the World Robotic Congress and the AAGL. Dr. Burke participates in a number of national professional societies and has earned recognition for video presentations demonstrating laparoscopic and robotic procedures. He has also received a Basic Science Award for a paper on signal pathways in human ovarian cancer cells. He has remained active in training medical students, residents, and fellows. Dr. Burke is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate and, unique care to women with gynecologic cancers and complex gynecologic issues.
