| Frequently Asked Questions We realize that as a prospective resident, you may have questions regarding our program. We have compiled a list of FAQ’s that we hope will help clarify many of these you may have. How many positions does your program offer? There are five categorical PGY-1 positions available each academic year. What is your accreditation status? We received full accreditation from the Residency Review Committee during our last review. What is your application deadline? All completed applications, with the exception of Dean’s Letters, MUST be submitted by November 1. Do you accept Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)? Yes. At this time, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital sponsors only J1 visas.
Do you have a cutoff for years after graduation from medical school? No.
How many letters of recommendation are needed? In addition to the Dean’s Letter, at least three letters of recommendation from faculty must be submitted. Are Housestaff required to do research? Residents are required to participate in research during the course of their training. What are your minimum USMLE scores? We do not have a specific “minimum” score. At Columbia University, we regard ourselves as being highly competitive program and we review each application in its entirety. USMLE Step 2 scores are not required at the time of application; however, they MUST be submitted once you are selected into the program. Is subsidized housing available? While the University does not provide housing, there are resources available to assist with the process and a housing stipend is given to each resident to defray the cost of living in New York.
