Dr. Laxmi Baxi, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has been on the faculty of Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons since 1979. She currently holds the position of Vice Chair for External Affairs in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and her practice specialty is Maternal Fetal Medicine. In 1992, Dr. Baxi was appointed Director of Obstetrics and later served as acting Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine for several years. After graduating with her medical degree from Bombay University, she served on faculty as an Assistant Professor for four years before coming to the United States. Dr. Baxi continued her medical training here by serving as Chief Resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Peter's Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She then came to Columbia Presbyterian in New York and completed her fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine from 1977-1979. During her extensive career, Dr. Baxi has held several leadership positions and received numerous teaching awards including one from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics. She has also been recognized for her work in quality assurance. Dr. Baxi has published extensively. Her work includes over 100 peer- reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews. Additionally she has presented over 70 abstracts at Professional Scientific Conferences and has received awards and recognition for some of those works. Dr. Baxi is active in Professional Societies, being a diplomate member of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine as well as a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a founding fellow of the Indian College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Her areas of expertise and interest are high-risk pregnancies, management of patients with previous pregnancy losses, habitual abortions, and managing pregnancies with medical complications including diabetes. |
