| Program Overview The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine provides a full line of Obstetric and Gynecologic services. This means our physicians are not only trained in obstetrics, gynecology and maternal fetal medicine but are also experts in sonography. Additionally, our ultrasound services are seamlessly integrated with obstetric and gynecologic MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). Having all sonographic and MRI services offered within the Department gives MFM the ability to both provide patients with a more comprehensive diagnosis and perform any therapeutic procedure that may be required, including ultrasound-guided procedures. Members of our medical team are leaders in the field, not only in the U.S., but also internationally. The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine is accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. We are committed to providing our patients with the highest level of care through superior expertise, cutting edge technology and adhering to strict Quality Assurance standards. | Obstetrical Ultrasound Services | | Ultrasonography has proved invaluable for monitoring pregnancy in a variety of ways, including identification of fetal anomalies, detection of the baby's position and placental location and determination of the baby's sex. Ultrasonography procedures include: Assessment and Evaluation First trimester evaluation Second and third trimester anatomical assessment 3-D ultrasound evaluation Prenatal diagnosis Screening First and Second trimester Down syndrome screening Miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy screening Multiple pregnancy screening Fetal anomaly screening Testing and Monitoring Biophysical profile and Doppler velocimetry/non-stress testing Fetal echocardiography Diagnostic Procedures Amniocentesis Chorionic villi sampling (CVS) Cordocentesis/Fetal blood sampling Therapeutic Procedures Fetal shunt procedures Fetal transfusion Medical treatment of the fetus Multifetal pregnancy reduction Selective fetal termination In addition to standard evaluation, patients may have the opportunity to participate in cutting edge research projects. Such studies are instrumental in expanding knowledge in the field and making advances in treatment. | Gynecological Ultrasound Services | | Applications of Gynecological ultrasound include general screening of women who are currently or have previously experienced menopause. MFM also performs special diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as ovarian cyst aspirations and sonohysterograms (evaluation of the internal surface of the uterus). Gynecological ultrasound procedures include: Sonohysterography Spectral and color Doppler screening of pelvic or ovarian masses Ovarian, uterine, and tubal pathology evaluation Surveillance of patients under tamoxifen treatment Follicular monitoring Ovarian cyst aspiration A unique aspect of Obstetric sonography at Columbia University is the multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach to patient care. Our collaboration and integration with the world -renown Children's Hospital of New York will provide you with every possible diagnostic and treatment option for both mother and fetus. In the case of a suspicion or diagnosis of a maternal or fetal condition, the vast depth of expertise found at New York-Presbyterian Hospital is at your service. We will coordinate your care with a broad team of international experts in pediatrics, pediatric surgery, pediatric cardiology, neonatology and genetics. Our highly trained genetic counselors are available to provide comprehensive genetic analysis and counseling and coordinate your care throughout your pregnancy. Procedures available in the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Program include: Cordocentesis/Fetal blood sampling Fetal shunt procedures Fetal transfusion Medical treatment of the fetus with heart problems Multifetal pregnancy reduction Selective fetal termination To enhance accuracy and comprehensiveness of prenatal diagnosis, the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine offers Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services in conjunction with the fetal specialists in Radiology. MRI is used for second and third trimester evaluation of certain fetal, placental and maternal abnormalities. It is used at our physicians' discretion and may provide additional information to ultrasound analysis for appropriate management and diagnosis of certain conditions. | | | | For ultrasound appointments at any of our locations, call 212-305-4MFM | Manhattan: Herbert Irving Pavilion 212-305-4MFM 161 Fort Washington Avenue, Suite 401 New York, New York 10032 (Located between 165th and 168th streets.
