Overview

Ashlie Butler, DNP is a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specializing in Women’s Health. Trained in the PREPP intervention, Ashlie currently provides psychopharmacological care and psychotherapy to patients in the Women's Mental Health @Ob/Gyn at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She discovered her passion for supporting women during the perinatal period through her prior work as a doula.

Dr. Butler specializes in treating psychiatric disorders related to reproductive, traumatic and sexual health challenges, utilizing a mindfulness and social justice-based treatment philosophy. In addition to her role within Ob/Gyn, she also engages in research related to developmental neuroscience, trauma-informed obstetric care and perinatal mood disorders within Dr. Catherine Monk's Perinatal Pathways Lab. Her professional passions are centered upon providing equitable reproductive mental and maternal health to individuals and communities facing disproportionate care.

Having worked in various clinical and research roles within Latin America and East Africa, Dr. Butler is interested in exploring and observing how transgenerational trauma, oppression, and health disparities coalesce to inform developmental trajectories and behavior among marginalized populations within a global context. As a doula, Dr. Butler has worked collaboratively with doula communities of color throughout the city to advocate for birth autonomy and to expand access to birth support and perinatal resources among underserved communities.

Dr. Butler has experience supporting a range of agencies serving the mental and medical health needs of LGBTQ, perinatal, and homeless populations, in various capacities.
