Ob/Gyn Dispatches During COVID-19: Zev Williams, MD, PhD
Each day during the COVID-19 crisis, we'll share an update from a member of our team in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Today's note is from Zev Williams, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
At 7 pm last night, as they will again tonight, neighborhoods across all five boroughs erupted in cheers and applause, as the people of this great city celebrated their healthcare workers and essential personnel. It was a deeply moving, heartwarming and inspiring moment of unity. It also provided a moment to reflect.
We are living through a moment in world history that will be discussed for generations. But, as healthcare providers and the support staff who make this possible, we are fortunate to not just be an audience to what is happening. Rather, in helping our patients - remotely, in the office and in our hospital - we are using our training, talents, skills, drive, and most importantly our commitment and dedication to serve in this fight to help humanity through this pandemic.
Booker T. Washington famously said, “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.” Right now, we are in the midst of an extraordinarily intense period. But this will pass. Together, we will not just get through it - we will have helped countless others by the very work we are doing every day. One day soon, we will be able to celebrate what we accomplished in this time when we were needed the most, just like the city will do in our honor tonight.
