Ob/Gyn Department Launches Fellows Academy for Sub-Specialty Trainees

The first-ever Ob/Gyn Fellows Retreat, held April 2019

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center has created a Fellows Academy to provide senior sub-specialist trainees with an inclusive educational forum, inter-divisional mentorship, networking opportunities and wellness activities.

"With the Fellows Academy, we're bringing together fellows across sub-specialties to discuss common issues as they prepare for independent practice after they finish their training," said Rini B. Ratan, MD, Vice Chair of Medical Education in the Department of Ob/Gyn.

The initiative is also intended to enhance a broader sense of community within the department. This year, the Fellows Academy held talks on topics like "Creating a Research Career: Tips from Expert Research Faculty." The also co-ordinated the first-ever Fellows’ Retreat, held in April 2019. It was an all day affair, held off campus in midtown Manhattan, and all fellows were released from clinical duties for the day. The morning was devoted to an in-depth discussion of personal finances, led by a team of financial advisors who specialize in working with health care professionals. The afternoon portion of the retreat was devoted to a fun team-building exercise – a scavenger hunt through the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
