Statement from the Department of Ob/Gyn on the Atlanta shootings

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion condemn violence against our Asian-American communities. Please see below for a letter from our Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion about this week's events.

Dear Columbia Ob/Gyn Community,

We are saddened and horrified by the events in the Atlanta area this week. Eight people, six women of Asian descent, were killed at three businesses. We denounce this violence which is fueled by racism, xenophobia, white supremacy and misogyny. Unfortunately, this horrific crime comes in the wake of a devastating rise in anti-Asian violence. We mourn with our Asian-American communities who are experiencing loss and fear.

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion condemn these hateful actions. We stand committed to creating a culture of belonging and inclusion in our department and working to create a future that is safe and allows us all to thrive. We must fight against all forms of hatred and racial bias.

In community and solidarity,

Office of DEI
