Profile Headshot

Overview

I have been privileged to work with an amazing team to bring the best of prenatal medical care, therapy and interventions for complicated pregnancies. I have also been a high risk patient myself, and have trusted my peers and partners to take care of me and my children during this critical, yet beautiful time.

Dr. Nhan-Chang, is a member of the team of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) clinicians who provide invasive and non-invasive procedures for fetal diagnosis and therapy. She performs detailed 3-D/4-D ultrasound, fetal echocardiogram, fetal Doppler studies, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, and fetal blood sampling in addition to in-utero transfusions and other invasive procedures for high-risk patients. Dr. Nhan-Chang brings to the team her expertise and extensive training in ultrasound for prenatal diagnosis and placenta imaging for Placental Accreta Spectrum disorders. She completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Staten Island University Hospital and a fellowship in MFM at The Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Development/National Institutes of Health (NICHD/NIH) and Wayne State University in Detroit.

Diagnosis and prevention of preterm birth and preterm premature rupture of membranes are Dr. Nhan-Chang's primary clinical and research interests. She is currently working collaboratively on investigating the role of biomechanics in normal and abnormal cervical and uterine remodeling during pregnancy. Dr. Nhan-Chang has been involved with pioneering research on Sleep Disordered Breathing and Sleep Apnea in pregnancy. She currently serves as a co-investigator on the NICHD and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute-funded study on "Sleep Disordered Breathing during Pregnancy and Risks to Cardiovascular Health" as well as “A Randomized Trial of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) for Sleep Apnea in Pregnancy.” Other research interests include the role of the placenta and epigenetics in complicated pregnancies. Dr. Nhan-Chang is frequently invited to present abstracts and lectures at national and international forums. Her research is featured in the more than three dozen articles she has co-authored in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Nhan-Chang is involved in education and training for medical students, residents and fellows both locally and nationally. She holds positions on several boards and committees with a focus on simulation training, evidence based education and career advancement. She is the director of electives in Maternal Fetal Medicine for our own and for visiting medical students.

Research

For over a decade, I have collaborated on research on identifying risk factors and prevention strategies for the prevention of preterm birth. I also have an interest in the role of Disorderd sleep breathing and it’s effect on pregnancy outcomes.

During her fellowship in MFM at The Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Development/National Institutes of Health (NICHD/NIH) and Wayne State University in Detroit, Dr Nhan-Chang co-authored two dozen papers with an emphasis on infection, inflammation, and complications related to premature birth. She has continued to do research in this area for over a decade at Columbia University. Dr. Nhan-Chang also has an interest in sleep and sleep disordered breathing and how this affects both mother and fetus. She has been involved in pioneering research in this area and is a co-investigator on NICHD and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute-funded studies on "Sleep Disordered Breathing during Pregnancy and Risks to Cardiovascular Health" and “A Randomized Trial of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) for Sleep Apnea in Pregnancy.”
