As a Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), Dr. Smok's areas of expertise centers on prenatal genetic counseling, invasive fetal diagnosis including chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis. In addition to prenatal diagnosis, her special interests include medical ethics, cancer in pregnancy, and other maternal illnesses that can complicate pregnancy Dr. Smok is particularly interested in maternal health and its relationship to pregnancy, including underlying psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety, and caring for patients afflicted with cancer during pregnancy.
Dr. Smok coordinates care for pregnant cancer patients, working with the MFM’s multidisciplinary team, to continuously monitor the mother’s and baby’s health throughout the pregnancy. The close collaboration between MFM and Neonatology, Anesthesiology, and other subspecialties at CUMC affords patients the best chance for successful pregnancy outcomes, and beyond. Before she pursued a medical degree, Dr. Smok worked as a registered pharmacist with expertise in drug safety, surveillance, and regulations, joining CUMC‘s MFM Division in 2005. She is an active participant and member of several national professional societies: the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
