GME Certificate in Climate Change, Sustainability and Health at Columbia University Irving Medical Center Announces its First Cohort

Earlier this year, Columbia University Irving Medical Center launched a new graduate medical education (GME) initiative designed to develop expertise in climate change and healthcare sustainability that falls outside of existing specialty-specific GME curricula and foster multidisciplinary collaboration across GME programs.

We are delighted to announce the inaugural cohort of the GME Certificate of Distinction in Climate Change, Sustainability and Health: Erik Carlson (Internal Medicine), Karly Hampshire (Internal Medicine), Emily Hansman (OBGYN), Brandon Mallory (Emergency Medicine), and John Perino (OBGYN). Program activities will run for two academic years starting in June 2024.

The GME Distinction in Climate Change, Sustainability and Health program will train participants to serve as leaders in climate-and-health informed clinical care and sustainable healthcare delivery. The Certificate of Distinction was designed with the understanding that health professionals are uniquely positioned to support the response to the climate crisis with their professional expertise and role as health messengers. The two-year curriculum will include a combination of didactics around core competencies that health professionals will require to address the climate crisis moving forward, as well as interactive discussions with Columbia climate experts from the medical campus and beyond. The experience will culminate in a mentored scholarly project related to climate and health or sustainable health care.

The certificate program is led by Program Directors Cecilia Sorensen, MD, Director of the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education at Columbia University, Blair Wylie, MD, MPH, Director of the Collaborative for Women’s Environmental Health at Columbia University, and Rini Ratan, MD, Vice Chair of Education and Obstetrics/Gynecology Residency Program Director.

With its innovative curriculum, talented inaugural cohort, and esteemed Program Directors, we look forward to the future of the GME Certificate of Distinction in Climate Change, Sustainability and Health at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
